burien affordable housing & family shelter development

vision

Mary’s Place and Mercy Housing Northwest are developing a unique campus of co-located permanent affordable housing alongside a new shelter facility for families experiencing homelessness on the site of the current Mary’s Place family shelter in Burien.

imperatives

  • Center equity and opportunity to address the crisis of family homelessness

  • Innovation and use of best practices to create a well-planned community for residents, including children and families, as well as the broader Burien community

  • Concept and program formed with input from people with lived experience

details

Shelter

  • Emergency shelter for 200 family members in an efficient, sustainable facility with on-site services including housing support, health resources, and youth programs

  • Beyond on-site shelter and services, Mary’s Place will provide mobile outreach to unsheltered families and prevention services to keep families from entering homelessness

Housing

  • 90 units of permanently affordable housing for families earning at or below 60% of the area median income—at least 30 of which will be reserved for families leaving homelessness, creating a unique opportunity for families to move from shelter into housing, maintaining their community and school connections.

  • Including larger 2-4 bedroom units that fill a critical need in affordable family housing
