Businesses and residents across King County came together in an unprecedented way this past holiday season to support the Mary’s Place annual No Child Sleeps Outside campaign. The campaign raises funds to respond to our growing community crisis of hundreds of families and children sleeping outside in King County, many who are living in cars or tents, waiting months for shelter. With major gifts from the Starbucks Foundation, the Schultz Family Foundation, and Microsoft, together with more than 50 local businesses and organizations and thousands of people who gave online and in over 200 Starbucks stores, the campaign raised a record $4.5 million in just over 30 days! This money will allow Mary’s Place to open up to three additional family shelters and welcome in as many as 500 unsheltered families over the next nine months. One of those shelters is a former King County public health building in the White Center community. The site will open in early March and will eventually provide shelter and access to housing and employment resources for up to 70 family members from the area who are experiencing homelessness. We are excited about partnering with the County and the White Center community to provide much-needed services for families in south King County!
